Cape Country

Some issue related to climbing in the Cape Mountains: The Cape Country mountains are rather different from Table Mountain and the Peninsula and need to be treated with respect, for two reasons. Firstly, the routes are generally much longer and in in more remote areas. Read the Introduction to the Cape Mountains for more information. Secondly, access is more difficult as many areas are privately owned and access is either not allowed or strictly controlled. So although there are many more routes in these mountains than are listed in Mountain Meanders, only those with public (or semi-public i.e. by arrangement) access are described. All access conditions must be strictly observed as violations can jeopardize access for all. Access to a wider set of areas has been negotiated by the Mountain Club of South Africa (MCSA) so consider joining if you want to explore further. MCSA also owns several properties (and huts) which facilitate access to the surrounding mountains.
