Devil's Peak

Devil's Peak was known historically as 'Windberg' as the strong SE wind that frequently blows is channeled from it onto the residential areas below, especially when it is signalled by the white 'Table Cloth' cloud.

This cloud has an amusing legend associated with a pipe tobacco smoking competition between old Mr Van Hunks and the Devil. The Devil lost and being a bad loser took Van Hunks downstairs to run the competition over and over until he could win. So when the SE Cloud is seen forming over the Saddle then "Van Hunks and the Devil are at it again"

NB Following the devastating Devils Peak (and UCT) fire in May 2021, many Devils Peak paths were either closed or unpleasant. The Friends of Table Mountain started a voluntary rehabilitation program and SAN Parks partnered with them so the program now covers the whole mountain.
