Shoppers Dilemma

Lyrics copyright 2016 by Jeff Suzuki

To any pleasant tune.

Mundane Version

I went to Target for to buy myself a crafting box

And if they should present themselves a few more pairs of socks,

These tasks of mine I must recall while wand'ring through the store,

Or else my cart will fill with things that I have no need for.

Some DVDs, a nutmeg mill, a cooker slow and blue

But where these treasures I will keep I haven't got a clue.

SCA version

I went to Pensic marketplace to buy myself an axe,

And if it should present itself a skein or two of flax,

These tasks of mine I must recall while wand'ring through each store,

Unless my basket fills with things that I have no need for.

Some lucet cord, a brand new helm, some stockings white and blue,

But where to keep these treasures rare I haven't got a clue.

And soon I'll come back to my camp from Pensic marketplace

With basket full of goods acquired, and silver not a trace.

Notes

Once more, here's a song I wrote just as practice. It's short; I'll defend myself by saying that it's two songs in one: an original, and a filk. I started the mundane version while engaged in the very mission described (which ended in failure, incidentally); halfway through, I realized that I'd never be in a position to perform the mundane song, so I wrote a SCA version.

While writing it, I discovered that Heart's Ease, Chevy Chase, and In Peascod Time all have the same meter (iambic heptameter, if you care). Hence I've noted this can be sung to "any pleasant tune," a common period instruction.
