Peascod Time

Prepare to be confused...this song is also known as The Hunt's Up. It's also the music used for a song called Chevy Chase, except that Chevy Chase also has its own music. A contrafact to this music called The Lady's Fall later became so popular that later authors referred to that song when they meant this one...

The music is based on the score in Popular Music of the Olden Time (William Chapell, 1859), which dates it to ca. 1597, and sequenced by myself. Chappell only gives the following l yrics (but includes a Christmas song sung to the same tune, dated ca. 1642).

In Peascod time, when hound to horn gives ear,

Till buck be killed

And little lads, with pipes of corn

Sat keeping beasts afield.
