Printed photo onto a board covered in Mod Podge with acrylic paint on top
I chose to work with the same materials as my last piece where a photo was attached to a board covered in Mod Podge. I used these materials because they help people visualize how a mural interacts with its surroundings to create a larger purpose for the piece. For this piece, the area I chose was directly connected to the message presented in my mural. The area I chose is a dam that’s going to be taken down allowing fish to have more space to travel.
In my original planning, my message was broad as it targeted protecting the environment and cleaning up after yourself. As I began brainstorming where I could put my mural I chose an area where a dam is being removed to allow easier travel for fish. I got a suggestion that it could be interesting to use the space to not only house my mural but to also further push my message. So I changed the text of the mural from “Leave No Trace” to “Share The Earth”. Though different both are still connected while “Share The Earth” directly references the sharing of the river once the dam is removed.
I think moving forward I can think about how the area I chose to put piece as it can impact the piece’s message. For my next piece, I plan to move away from working over a photo of a real-life space. I would like to explore posters and stickers because they are a huge part of street art and are the method many people use to deliver messages. I can also carry over the idea of if these stickers and posters were real where could they be placed and how would it affect their message.
