Reflection
With this piece, I did a bunch of different media testing. I started with watercolor, liked how it felt and looked but wanted to try and use more interesting materials to give the piece feel like a cave painting. After moving on from watercolor I tried a couple of other things but I didn't enjoy the outcome of any of them. That's when I found a rock tile in my house that served perfectly as a canvas for my piece. I then used charcoal, brick, and coffee beans as a way to pigment white paint so I could apply it to my tile. These materials helped my piece achieve the look of an actual cave painting.
With this piece, I wanted to explore how past humans created streets and how they viewed their creations. Many people would imagine street art as a large piece usually in the city, with bright colors maybe tags on a wall. Cave paintings were early forms of this as they were on cave walls and often displayed in color. In prehistoric times early humans used this to not only record hunting trips but to also paint different things they saw even using early forms of tagging by blowing pigment over their hands.
This piece helped me focus on honing my essential question. Before I wasn't 100% with my question but after this SI I realized what I wanted to do with my pieces going forward which is to focus more on how the audience perceives street art. With my next piece, I plan on doing something similar to my first but moving the emphasis on the meaning and perception of the street rather than the legality.
