Essential Question:
How do artists create a dynamic observational drawing that also demonstrates individual style?
Portfolio Objectives:
Reinforce observational drawing skills
Explore and/or Identify a personal style
Create high-quality work
When it comes to making an observational drawing while also demonstrating individual style there is one really important factor, this being how you chose to incorporate your style. You need to be careful how you do this because it could take away from the object being observed. I chose to have one of the spikes of the shell morph into a tree.
The main focal point is the shell and sprouting out of the shell is a tree. I think both the tree and the bird's nest in the tree are dynamic. The one thing I would change is the background because I didn't get to spend a lot of time with the background which caused it to look plain.
I think that I did very well in trying to fit all the detail into both the shell and the tree. With the shell, there were many different colors and patterns on the face of the shell which made it hard to capture all of it. Another success is my imagined element and how I implemented it. The part where the shell goes from shell to tree looks smooth and doesn't cause distraction.
Reflection
I think this project really helped enforce many skills like the use of value, layout, and how to implement your own style. Value was really important especially for me because the shell had many different shades of lights and darks so it was very important to have value to make the drawing look more real. with almost every project the layout is what can really make a drawing interesting so it's very important to make sure the layout is well thought out. The last skill is implementing your own style which was kind of the main point of this project. for this project, I chose to have a tree coming out of the shell because I thought it fit well with the shell and I think it turned out very well.
