The buttocks are made up of 3 main muscles:
Glutes maximus
Gluteus medius
Gluteus minimus
The gluteus maximus is the largest glute muscle and it is responsible for the shape of the buttocks. It is important when exercises requires generating force from the lower body.
The gluteus medius is to help with the rotation of the leg and stabilization of the pelvis
The gluteus minimus is the smallest and the deepest muscle among the other 2. This muscle also helps with the rotation of the lower limbs and keeping the pelvis stable when moving.
