Flip Grid Setup
FLIP Grid - Setup and How We will Use It
Flip Grid is a video chat classroom site where, you, as a student in my Mechatronics Engineering class, will be able to turn in
Video Assignments and Assessments - These typically will be you explaining how something works, or what something is... For example soon you will have a Flipgrid assignment to explain how a Breadboard works...
Video Blogs - You may also have an opportunity to document a project in a video blog format
- Unit: Mechatronics, Engineering & Technology Introduction
- Module: Class Setup
- This is a LEARNING Activity : Lesson / Lab
- Last Revised: Aug 9, 2021 - Authored: June 15, 2021

Learning Objective:
- register and access FlipGrid
- Be comfortable presenting in a video format (just like TikTok...)
- Understand that Digital literacy is going to be as important in the 21 century as writing is
- No prior knowledge expected - You be you!!!
- PC, Laptop or Other device to access the Mathematics web application
- Each lesson will have specific items needed to complete the labs and tasks
Lesson Topic - Registering & First FlipGrid Video:
Overview, Introduction & Prerequisites:
Digital literacy is going to be as important in the 21 century as writing is. Video is a very visceral and personal form of communication. We are going to build a portfolio of videos of you explaining stuff in an intelligent and concise manner. We are going to practice doing it well.
To register for the Mechatronics Engineering Flipgrid Class (both AM & PM), please use the link provided below.
You will be registering with your new @my.metroed.net email. If you have not got this email yet, please check with your instructor.
That will be the primary email you use in class for classroom assignments. You will also need to pick a Password that you can remember. We will talk about passwords the first few days too...
Where is the FlipGrid link?
Using your @my.metroed.net email to log in, select the class canvas link to this assignment. Check with your instructor.
Your Instructor will give you a Group Join Code... Check with them... it's probably in your LMS (we use Canvas) Announcements for today.
What Does A Group Look Like?
My 2021-2022 Mechatronics Engineering class looks like this. You will see Video prompts that you can respond to. These will be assigned in your School LMS system, like Canvas. These will show up as class assignments.
How Do I Respond & Submit A Video?
Typically you will have an assignment assigned in your school LMS, like i said, my class uses Canvas, and I assign all my FlipGrid assignments there.
The first one will be to introduce yourself, and tell us how to pronounce your name and why to selected this class…
"Hi, my name is Mr. Burnham. It's spelled "Burn Ham", but pronounced "Bur num". I'm in this class because I love to teach Engineering. I'm hoping to learn lots more about Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and Machine Vision... so come along for a wiled ride..."
After that, most video assignments will be a little more serious… But don’t fear, I’m not grading on the Video, but rather the content… I will be grading your ability to explain complex Engineering concepts…. In 90 seconds… Sometimes it will be longer...
The first real video assignment in my class will be to explain how a breadboard works. It's up to 90 seconds... so not short,m but also not very long. You need to PLAN!!!
Plan what you will say.
Practice will be the key.
If you need to, Write down a set of bullet points or even a full script of what you will say. I want you to start getting better at presenting, so at first you could read a script, but eventually you will need to work with just bullet points or no queue cards at all.
Then practice and have fun for 90 seconds.
