Breaking Bad News: The SPIKES Approach
The SPIKES approach is a helpful guide for healthcare professionals when delivering difficult news to patients. It was developed by Walter Baile and his colleagues at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. Here's what SPIKES stands for:
Setting: Create a comfortable and private environment.
Perception: Understand the patient's current understanding of their situation.
Invitation: Ask the patient how much information they want to know.
Knowledge: Share the medical information clearly and honestly.
Emotions: Acknowledge and address the patient's feelings.
Strategy: Discuss support options and follow-up plans.
