El present simple describe rutinas, hábitos, acciones que se repiten, verdades generales y hechos.
I go to school on foot.
Se suele utilizar con expresiones como always, usually, often, sometimes, never, every day/week/year, once/twice a year/month/week, on + [un día de la semana en plural], at night, in the morning, in the summer, etc.
Ollie sometimes uses instant messaging.
I never send emails.
Do you often post messages on social media?
She always watches that TV programme.
El present continuous describe acciones que están sucediendo mientras hablamos, o alrededor de ese momento.
I usually eat salad, but today I'm eating lasagna.
Suele ir acompañado de las expresiones now, right now, at the moment, today, these days, this week, etc..
‘Where’s Angel right now?’ ‘He’s chatting online.’
They’re studying for their history exam at the moment.
‘Is Alicia doing her homework now?’ ‘Yes, she is.’
Los stative verbs indican un estado mas que una acción y suelen utilizarse en Present Simple. Estan relacionados con:
Las emociones y los sentimientos (dislike, enjoy, hate, hope, like, love, need, prefer, want);
El pensamiento y la opinion (believe, forget, guess, know, remember, think, understand);
La percepción y los sentidos (feel, hear, see, smell, sound, taste, touch);
Los precios y las medidas (cost, measure, weigh) , y la posesión (belong, have, own).
Estos verbos describen, no actúan.
Ejemplos:
I like your new mobile phone. (estado de gusto, no acción) ❌ I’m liking your new mobile phone.
What does that word mean? (estado de significado, no acción) ❌ What is that word meaning?
This cake tastes delicious. (estado de sabor, no acción) ❌ This cake is tasting delicious.
Algunos verbos indican tanto "estado" como "actividad/acción" y pueden usarse en Present Simple y en Present Continuous.
Will thinks it's important to express your feelings. (=Will cree que es importante expresar los sentimientos.) [estado]
They are thinking about talking it over later. (=Estan pensando en hablar sobre ello mas tarde.) [actividad]
El verbo see en Present Continuous indica una acción futura fijada de antemano.
Paul is seeing his girlfriend, Lauren, tonight. (=Paul vera a su novia, Lauren, esta noche.) [Ya han quedado.]
