Como complemento directo de algunos verbos: avoid (evitar), consider (considerar), deny (negar), detest (odiar), dislike (no gustar), enjoy (disfrutar), finish (terminar), miss (echar de menos), postpone (posponer), recommend (recomendar), suggest (sugerir), practise (practicar), imagine (imaginar), keep (mantener), etc.
Many people enjoyed watching that show (=Mucha gente disfrutó viendo ese espectáculo)
Detrás de algunas estructuras:
be used to (=estar acostumbrado): I am used to speaking in public.
get used to (=acostumbrarse a): Students have to get used to studying every day.
be worth (=merecer la pena): It's worth learning a foreign language.
can't help (=no poder evitar): I can't help singing in the shower!
can't stand (=no soportar): I can't stand watching people fight.
don't mind (=no importar): I don't mind working overtime (=No me importa hacer horas extra)
wouldn't mind (=no importaría): I wouldn't mind having a coffee right now.
feel like (=apetecer): I feel like going for a walk. It's really sunny outside.
it's no use (=no sirve de nada): It's no use worrying about the past.
look forward to (=desear, estar ansiono): I'm looking forward to seeing my friends again.
see myself (=verme a mí mismo): I don't see myself working as a doctor.
Es la forma verbal precedida de "to" y se emplea en estos casos:
Detras de verbos como: afford (=permitirse), agree (=estar de acuerdo), allow (=permitir), appear, choose, decide, expect, hesitate (=dudar), hope (=esperar), learn, manage (=arreglárselas), offer, plan, promise, pretend (=fingir), refuse (=rechazar, negarse), seem, want, wish, etc.
We have learnt to use sign language recently. (=Hemos aprendido a utilizar el lenguaje de signos recientemente.)
Detras de algunos adjetivos y adverbios como: easy, happy, sad, lucky, nice, hard, difficult, impossible, important, etc.
He woke up early to go jogging. (=Se levantó pronto para ir a correr.)
It's hard to learn sign language. (=Es difícil aprender el lenguaje de signos)
Detras del complemento indirecto de verbos como: advise, encourage, help, invite, persuade, teach, tell, warn, etc.
The salesman persuaded me to buy this camera. (=El dependiente me convenció para comprar esta camara.)
Sin embargo, make y let van seguidos de un complemento indirecto + la forma base (infinitivo sin to).
I'll let you go providing that you get home before midnight. (=Te dejare ir con la condición de que llegues a casa antes de medianoche.)
Verbos como begin, continue, forbid, hate, intend, like, love, prefer, propose o start pueden ir seguidos de ambas formas verbales sin que su significado varíe:
We began to dance as soon as we heard the music. (=Empezamos a bailar tan pronto como oímos la música.)
We began dancing as soon as we heard the music. (=Empezamos a bailar tan pronto como oímos la música.)
En cambio, otros verbos como remember, stop, forget, regret, try, etc. pueden ir seguidos de gerundio o un infinitivo pero su significado varía. A continuación tienes algunos ejemplos:
forget + gerundio se emplea en frases negativas para indicar la imposibilidad de olvidar algo ocurrido en el pasado.
I'll never forget meeting such an extraordinary woman. (=Nunca olvidaré haber conocido a una mujer tan extraordinaria.)
forget + infinitivo significa "olvidarse de hacer algo".
David forgot to turn off the lights. (=David se olvidó de apagar las luces.)
regret + gerundio significa "arrepentirse de haber hecho algo en el pasado".
Julia regretted telling her secret. (=Julia se arrepinti6 de contar su secreto.)
regret + infinitivo significa "lamentar lo que se va a decir a continuación".
I regret to tell you that this might be a life-threatening disease. (=Lamento decirle que esta podria ser una enfermedad potencialmente mortal.)
remember + gerundio significa "recordar algo que se hizo en el pasado".
I don't remember saying such a thing. (=No recuerdo haber dicho tal cosa.)
remember + infinitivo significa "acordarse de hacer algo".
Remember to take your passport before you leave. (=Acuérdate de coger el pasaporte antes de salir.)
stop + gerundio significa "dejar un habito".
Leo feels much better since he stopped smoking. (=Leo se encuentra mucho mejor desde que dejó de fumar.)
stop + infinitivo significa "dejar de hacer algo para hacer otra cosa".
We will stop to have a break in an hour. (=Pararemos para hacer un descanso en una hora.)
