En inglés, utilizamos la estructura there + be para indicar que algo existe o se encuentra en un lugar determinado. A diferencia del español, donde usamos "hay" para todo, el inglés distingue entre singular y plural.
En los niveles iniciales, lo fundamental es dominar la concordancia y las formas básicas de pregunta y negación.
1. Afirmación: ¿Uno o varios?
There is (There's): Se usa con sustantivos en singular o incontables.
Example: There is a new restaurant in Hill Street.
There are: Se usa con sustantivos en plural.
Example: There are seven days in a week.
2. Negación e Interrogación
Negativa: Añadimos not o n't al verbo.
Example: There isn't any milk in the fridge.
Pregunta: Invertimos el orden del verbo y there.
Example: Is there a bank near here?
Yes, there is. / No, there isn’t.
A medida que avanzas, verás que there puede viajar por todos los tiempos gramaticales y combinarse con auxiliares.
1. Cambios de tiempo
Pasado: There was (singular) y There were (plural).
Presente Perfecto: There has been / There have been (ha habido).
Futuro: There will be (habrá).
2. Uso con Modales Podemos expresar probabilidad, necesidad o hábito usando verbos modales antes del be.
Example: There must be some way of contacting her.
Example: There used to be a cinema here, but it closed.
3. La regla de la lista Si mencionas varios objetos en una lista, el verbo concuerda con el primer elemento de la misma.
Example: There is a bottle of milk and some eggs.
1. Verbos de existencia avanzados En contextos literarios o formales, se pueden usar otros verbos en lugar de be, como arise, exist, follow o remain.
Example: During the 1990s there arose a demand for organic food.
2. Estructuras de reporte y "There being"
Reporte pasivo: There is expected to be a lot of interest in the property.
Causa y motivo: En inglés formal, usamos la forma en -ing (there being) para introducir una razón.
Example: There being no evidence against him, he was released.
⚠️ Common Mistakes
Confundir "There is" con "It is": There is expresa existencia; It is identifica o describe algo ya mencionado.
Mal: It is a book on the table. Bien: There is a book on the table.
There's con plurales: Aunque en el inglés hablado informal es muy común oír there's seguido de un plural, en un examen o texto formal debes usar there are.
Traducción literal de "no hay": No digas There no are. Usa There are no o There aren't any.
