Almost 820 million people in the world- one in nine- do not have access to enough food. The UN has set a global target as part of the Sustainable Development Goals to “end hunger by 2030“. Currently we are far from reaching this target. (M. Roser)
Studying science will prepare you for a range of exciting and rewarding careers. The Farm to Fork Food Science elective will help you to discover how our food is grown, harvested, processed and how it eventually gets to our table.
You will better understand the consequences of food wastage on our planet, how climate change impacts the supply of food on a global scale, by planning, conducting and presenting scientific investigations. The study of agroecology as an alternative approach to food production that nourishes human communities will be explored.
There will be a visit to a world class sustainable farm will allow you to witness this phenomenal fruit and vegetable farming practice in Victoria.
Furthermore, you will have the opportunity to explore health issues such as coeliac disease, lactose and fructose intolerances, and foodborne illnesses caused by pathogens. Agricultural chemicals and additives in our food supply contribute to risks of chronic illnesses such as cancer, will also be discussed, and compared to Indigenous cultural practices.
Finally, you will have the opportunity to visit a local food bank and prepare your own sustainable meals at school. Key science components: Environmental Science, Biology, and basic components of Chemistry, and Physics.
