Core Year 9/10 English

Unit Description

In the subjects of Year 9 and 10 English there is a focus on developing the students’ understanding of how to analyse and make meaning of various texts such as Gilbert Grape in Year 9 and The Curious Incident of the Dog in Year 10. The study of texts also provides the students with a capacity to explore given contexts and to become familiar with elements of the different genres and muti-modal text types. These core English subjects will give the students an opportunity to develop the skills of analysing persuasive texts and, give them increasing confidence to employ these strategies to present to an audience in a persuasive manner. The students also study how writers craft their writing in a range of ways. The deconstruction of exemplar texts is a fundamental aspect of the area of Craft of Writing and the students create their own texts using many of the strategies observed in the selection of mentor texts studies.  A Framework of Ideas such as the concept of Identity for Year 9 English and Courage for Year 10 English will underpin the focus of the exemplar texts analysed for The Craft of Writing. The students will continue to investigate how language structures, form, purpose and audience are used to influence audience response to Issues and Arguments, and how they shape one’s writing for  certain effects and purposes.
