Some influential global events occurred in the 20th Century, which led to some significant global impacts. Global History begins with the ill-considered peace treaty of Versailles, which would eventually contribute to the outbreak of World War Two. The interwar years of the 1920s are examined, where you will analyse the impact of the new technologies, which shape so much of our modern world. The study focuses on changes to the role of women over this time and the 1930s where we look at how the Great Depression affected daily life, the part it played in Hitler’s rise, and the failed efforts of maintaining peace by Neville Chamberlain, the UK Prime Minister. The course of World War Two is briefly explored as well as the Holocaust, which is focused on in greater detail. Students will consider the factors which allowed the Allies to win. Then there is the examination of the post war years, specifically looking at the impact of WWII on African and Asian independence movements and how the concept of human rights contributed to the Civil Rights Movement.
Understanding the past and the causes and consequences of history changing events, enables you to be more informed about how we proceed when faced with similar events in the future. This study will enable you to have a better insight when examining current global issues by applying your understanding of the events of the past.
