Studying Year 9 Extension Mathematics will prepare you for a range of exciting and rewarding careers. This subject is for those students who are mathematically inclined and have achieved an ‘A’ grade average in Year 8 Mathematics. The course is designed to extend and help to prepare you for Year 10 Mathematics for Methods, which is a stepping stone into VCE Mathematics Methods and VCE Specialist Mathematics. It will give you a solid foundation in the following areas of study; Trigonometry, Algebraic skills, Linear and Quadratic graphs, Measurement and Probability, by providing you with important background knowledge, as well as giving you an insight into the rigour and high expectations of Year 10 Mathematics for Methods. You will be introduced to the use of computer algebra system (CAS) technology throughout the course.
All Year 9 Extension Mathematics students will require a scientific calculator, which they should retain from Year 8. In addition, all students will require a Texas Instruments TI-Nspire II CAS Calculator (cost approx $260).
This is the recommended calculator for Year 10 and will be able to be re-sold in the following year if not required for VCE.
