Studying Science will prepare you for a range of exciting and rewarding careers.
This elective will provide you with a solid foundation before studying VCE Chemistry Unit 1 and 2, as well as giving you an insight into the rigour and high expectations of VCE Chemistry. You will plan, conduct, problem solve and present scientific investigations in a variety of settings. The following key areas will also be explored; revision of precipitation reactions, ionic, metallic and covalent bonding.
You will be able to further develop your skills in writing electronic configurations using orbitals and balancing equations that were introduced in the Year 9 Science (Core) unit. This unit will then expand into areas such as the Mole concept, calculating molar mass and concentration of solutions, acid/base theory and titrations.
You will also be introduced to hydrocarbons (alkanes, alkenes and alkynes) where you will explore their structure and function in relation to everyday chemistry. The key science components: Chemistry, basic Physics, Biology, and Environmental Science.
Year 9 Core Science (Unit 1) is a prerequisite. It is also recommended that students study at least one other Science elective in Year 9, before studying Chemistry Investigation in Year 10. This subject is only recommended for students enrolled in the Year 10 mainstream program, and who have achieved a B+ average in their Science and Mathematics subjects in Year 9.
