Studying Year 10 Mathematics for Methods will prepare you for a range of exciting and rewarding careers. This course is designed to extend and help to prepare you for VCE Mathematics Methods, VCE Specialist Mathematics, VCE Chemistry and/or VCE Physics. It will give you a solid foundation for the subject by providing you with important background knowledge, as well as giving you an insight into the rigour and high expectations of VCE Mathematics Methods, VCE Specialist Mathematics, VCE Chemistry and/or VCE Physics.
You will be challenged in this course by working collaboratively in a team to design, conduct, problem solve and interpret data or mathematical modelling. You will also continue to build on your technology skills using CAS and spreadsheets learnt in the Year 9 Extension Mathematics units.
All students will be presented with a broad range of skills and then introduced to more complex Mathematics such as, surds, polynomials, advanced algebra, algorithms and advanced trigonometry.
This subject is for those students who are mathematically inclined. Year 10 Mathematics for Methods addresses concepts including functions, calculus and circular functions, and therefore students who have strong algebraic skills and who are achieving consistent results of “B+” or above in Year 9 Mathematics, are encouraged to select this subject. This course is not recommended for students achieving below a B+ average in assessments in Year 9.
Students interested in studying Year 11 VCE Mathematical Methods (CAS) and/or VCE Specialist Mathematics, must choose this stream.
Considering progress and achievement, Year 10 Mathematics placements are made based on teacher recommendations. There may be the opportunity to change from the Mathematics for Methods to Mathematics for General streams in Semester 2 of Year 10.
Calculators In Year 10 and VCE Mathematics
All Year 10 students will require a scientific calculator, which should be retained from Year 9. In addition, all students in the Year 10 General or the Methods streams will require a Texas Instruments TI-Nspire CAS Calculator (cost approx $220).
The recommended calculator for Year 10 will be able to be re-sold in the following year if not required for VCE.
