Studying Year 10 Applications in Mathematics will prepare you for a range of exciting and rewarding careers. This elective is designed to extend and help to prepare you for VCE Mathematics Methods, VCE Specialist Mathematics, VCE Chemistry and/or VCE Physics. It will give you a solid foundation for the subject by providing you with important background knowledge, as well as giving you an insight into the rigour and high expectations of VCE Mathematics Methods, VCE Specialist Mathematics, VCE Chemistry and/or VCE Physics. You will be challenged in this elective by working collaboratively in a team to design, conduct, problem solve and interpret data or mathematical modelling. You will also continue to build on your technology skills using CAS and spreadsheets learnt in the Year 9 Advanced Mathematics units, plus the Y10 Mathematics for Methods units.
There will be opportunities for students to negotiate and co-construct curriculum and assessment.
Calculators In Year 10 and VCE Mathematics
All Year 10 students will require a scientific calculator, which they should retain from Year 9. In addition, all students in General or the Methods streams will require a Texas Instruments TI-Nspire CAS Calculator (cost approx $220).
The recommended calculator for Year 10 will be able to be re-sold in the following year if not required for VCE.
Satisfactory completion of Year 9 Extension Mathematics (Units 1 and 2) and, Year 10 Mathematics for Methods (Units 1 and 2). This subject is only recommended for students who are currently enrolled in the Year 10 Mathematics for Methods course.
