Project ideal online
I chose to include Project idea online in my resource collection. According to our book, "The Inclusion Classroom," "Multiple disabilities refers to the presence of two or more impariments that significantly influence an individual's ability to learn and function without adaptations and that cannot be accommodated in special education programs devoted to only one of the impairments." (Mastropieri & Scruggs, 2018) Our book also states that students with multiple disabilites ". . . benefit greatly from positive social interactions with their general education peers. The creation of peer-support networks, friendship circles, and social circles and participation in after-school activities are strongly advocated for individuals with severe disabilites."
The Project ideal website backs up this information. On their site they included a teaching strategies section. One of the strategies included was peer tutoring. The site states, One area of support that can be particularly effective for all involved is peer tutoring. Peer tutoring has been proven to have positive results for students with multiple disabilities in a number of separate research studies. However, care must be taken that the tutoring is not a one-way relationship, but is reciprocal. The student with multiple disabilities should also be able to provide something to the tutoring process, even if it is a simple social behavior. Some training on both sides will be necessary to make this a fruitful support system." (Project ideal)
Our book also explains that, "some have suggested that instruction for students wit severe disabilities should focus primarily on essesntial life skills. . . Browder and her colleagues argued that students with severe disabilites have the right to full educational opportunities, including increased expectations." (Mastropieri & Scruggs, 2018) The Project ideal website backs up this information. On their site they included an impact on learning section. One of the impacts is on adaptive skills. The site states, "While developing age-appropriate adaptive skills is a challenge for students with multiple disabilities, their ability to learn can help provide them with some level of independence in a number of life skills areas. Appropriate educational programming for these students should include self-care and self-advocacy components, as these skills are absolutely essential for their inclusion in the community." (Project ideal)
This website would be helpful when I need to refresh my knowledge on what mulitiple disabilities is and what it has to do with. This site had very similar information to the book but had clearly stated headings that made it easy to find the information that I was looking for. This may also be a good parent resource for parents who are new to the disability.
