A white modifier gene, Skeleton changes a white markings shapes to be vaguely skeleton or bone shaped. If no white marks are present, this gene adds lighter or darker bone-like marks at low opacity to the coat.
Genes affected:
Tobiano, Stocking, Irish, Splash, Overo, Piebald, Sabino.
Note The bone-shapes do not extend outside of the usual ranges for the white marks unless multiple markings are present. The bones should also resemble bones in that particular anatomical area. For example, white marks on the sides and back could resemble the ribs and or spine. The face would have a skull-like shape. These shapes do not need to be anatomically correct for an algolope specifically and can have some abstraction or simplification.
In piebald the holes become bone or rib shaped instead of spot-like.
(nSkel) Single Allele and Double Allele
There is no range or expression difference between single and double copies of the gene.
Edge:
Edges of Skeleton can be Hard, Soft (without white marks only), or Blended and may have mapping.
Variation:
Skeleton without white marks can fade into the base coat.
Skeleton with white marks sits above other marks, skeleton without white marks can sit above or below white marks but generally sits above the base coat and underneath other markings.
Skeleton with white marks should remain in the range of the marks it's affecting.
At least 1 bone, abstract or simplified must be visible even without white marks. (Such as the Skull or a rib)
Skeleton should be a color natural to what it sits on, either dark or light and at a low opacity, between 20-60% when not paired with a white mark.
Skeleton is affected by Reversal. When paired with a white mark that mark or markings can become 'dark' or black even without each mark having reversal itself.
Without white marks, reversal causes the bone marks to show as black bones, which can have up to 100% opacity.
The effect of Skeleton on white marks can be obvious or minimal as long as at least one bone shape is recognizable.
Examples: (minis below are not suitable references for ranges. They depict edge varieties, possible color options and shapes. See chart above for acceptable ranges.)
Overo Stocking on Tan.
Overo Stocking on Tan with Skeleton.
Hard Edge Skeleton, lighter than base coat showing through the whole body.
Hard Edge Skeleton, darker than the base coat.
Skeleton with Soft edges, as well as fade.
At least 1 bone should show, such as the skull.
Tovero (Tobiano + Overo) with Belton on Tan
Tovero with Belton and Skeleton
Tovero with Belton and Reverse Skeleton. All white marks are reversed to black.
