Holocaust Memorial Day Event

Hertsmere’s Holocaust Memorial Day Event takes place on 26th January this year, and the Scouts have been invited and asked to help. It is a time for everyone to pause to remember the millions of people who have been murdered or whose lives have been changed beyond recognition during the Holocaust, Nazi Persecution and in subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur. On this day, we can honour the survivors of these regimes and challenge ourselves to use the lessons of their experience to inform our lives today.

This is a time when we seek to learn the lessons of the past and to recognise that genocide does not just take place on its own, it is a steady process which can begin if discrimination, racism and hatred are not checked and prevented.  We are fortunate in the UK, we are not at risk of genocide.  However, discrimination has not ended, nor has the use of the language of hatred or exclusion.  There is still much to do to create a safer future and Holocaust Memorial Day is an opportunity to start this process.

The day brings together the diverse strands of our communities to commemorate the day in our neighbourhoods.  This is a real demonstration of how lessons of the past can inform our lives today and ensure everyone works together to create a safer, better future.

Local authorities are at the heart of the community and have a vital role to play in commemorating Holocaust Memorial Day.

The Mayor, Cllr Pete Rutledge, would like to invite you to take part in Hertsmere’s Holocaust Memorial Day Event being held on Thursday 26th January in Radlett.  The event will begin with a candlelit parade from the Radlett Railway Station Car Park at 6.00pm, which will walk through Watling Street to The Radlett Centre, where a ceremony will take place to include videos, a speaker, speeches and musical performances.

We have been asked to help set up and steward with the event starting at 5:15pm. The Scouts already been asked but if there are any more volunteers please let Jackie know on info@1stradlettscouts.org.uk.  If otherwise you would like to take part in the parade and/or the ceremony, please e-mail mayors.secretary@hertsmere.gov.uk stating: Full name, Address, Telephone number and E-mail address. Allocation will be made on a first come, first served basis.
