The World Environment Day is celebrated on the 5th of June every year and aims at raising awareness and celebrating environmental action.
In the above context and with the aim to create awareness of the need to care for the environment, the Council of Religions (CoR) approached the University of Mauritius (UoM) for a Symbolic Tree Planting Event.
This event was held on Wednesday 18 September 2024 at 10.00 a.m. with the planting of the Trochetia Boutoniana plant (common name: Boucle d'Oreille ) on the green area near the UoM Cafeteria (at the back of Lecture Theatre 1).

(Trochetia Boutoniana)
The Trochetia Boutoniana is an endemic shrub with beautiful bell-shaped flowers. It was declared as the National Flower of Mauritius in 1992 when the country acceded to the status of Republic. It was named after the French Botanist Louis Bouton.
It is to be noted that the CoR has a longstanding collaboration with UoM dating back to 2009 with the offer of the Certificate and Diploma programmes in Peace and Interfaith Studies.
