Celebrations for the 55th Anniversary of the Independence of Mauritius and the 31st Anniversary of the Republic of Mauritius

To celebrate the 55th Anniversary of the Independence of Mauritius and the 31st Anniversary of the Republic of Mauritius, the University organised its Flag Raising Ceremony on Friday 10 March 2023 at 11.00 hrs in the Paul Octave Wiehe Auditorium.

Unfortunately, due to the prevailing bad weather conditions, our students could not be physically present on Campus to participate in the celebrations. However, they were able to follow the Ceremony, which was livestreamed on the UoM Facebook Channel.

The ceremony started with a speech by the President of the Students’ Union (read by a UoM Staff Member), followed by Cultural Items “Mauritius the Rainbow Nation” and “55 an Larmoni dan nou repiblik” presented by some Staff Members of the University of Mauritius.  It also included a presentation by Mr Satyendra Peerthum, Historian, Lecturer and Writer on the theme “Gauging the Pulse of Mauritian Independence': The University of Mauritius, Public Education, and Teachers as Contributors to the Process of Nation Building in the Republic of Mauritius”.

It was a pleasure and an honour for me, as Vice-Chancellor, to address the audience on this highly auspicious occasion. After the Flag Raising, our Chief Guest, Mrs Priscilla Balgobin-Bhoyrul, President of Mauritius Bar Association, gave her address.

The Official Ceremony concluded with a message from the Chancellor.

We organised another Flag Raising Ceremony on Tuesday 14 March 2023 in POWA so that UoM students could officially celebrate the National Day.  Mr Numaan Duffaydar, President of Students’ Union delivered his address to the students.
