Library OER grants support faculty in the creation, adaptation and adoption of OERs for use in the classroom. The intent of the grants is to help increase the use of open educational content at the university, to advance pedagogical innovation, enhance access and student learning and reduce textbook and class material costs.
The Library’s publishing program has helped to produce a number of OER textbooks. These ebooks are freely available online and can be downloaded in a variety of formats. Instructors making use of these textbooks for courses can check licensing terms for each title to see crediting and use options.
The Library hosts several open-source software packages that can be used for authoring books, writing long-form articles and born-digital scholarship. Current options include Pressbooks and Scalar. The Library also welcomes suggestions to investigate additional platforms. If you are interested in creating or exploring OERs for courses, email Web Services Librarian, Sally Wilson swilson@torontomu.ca.
Faculty can now submit course reading lists to the Library’s eReserve Service in preparation for the fall term. The service makes course readings electronically available within D2L courses at no extra cost to students. To ensure readings are ready for fall, please submit as soon as possible. Note: due to higher than normal demand, processing times may take longer than usual. Information regarding deadlines can be found on the Digital Course Readings page. For more information, email reserve@torontomu.ca.
The Library’s Open Access Educational Resources guide provides information about OERs, what they are, how to use them and how to locate a number of Library and online resources. This includes information on data, images/media, books and more. For more information, email Copyright and Scholarly Engagement Librarian, Ann Ludbrook aludbrook@torontomu.ca.
