The information on this page outlines the process for hiring a Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), Unit 1 Contract Lecturer. This includes both sessional (3-5 sections per term) or part-time (1-2 sections per term) contract lecturers.
Posting CUPE, Unit 1 Contract Lecturer appointments require the approval of faculty loading (ie. Ted Rogers School faculty loading sheets) by the Dean's Office (Associate Dean, Academic Undergraduate Programs).
For more information on faculty loading deadlines, please see the TFA Faculty & CUPE Unit 1 Loading Deadlines on the Faculty Loading Page.
The Ted Rogers School CUPE, Unit 1 Contract Lecturer Postings Guide for Chairs, Directors, GPDs, GPAs and DAs includes guidelines, templates and complete instructions on how to process CUPE, Unit I contract lecturer postings. DAs/GPAs should also refer to the TRSM eHire CUPE, Unit 1 Process for a quick high-level reference guide when processing postings.

CUPE Unit 1 Contract Lecturers who have Continuing Appointments must still be sent a contract for every term they teach, and a "Notice of Continuing Appointment" letter needs to be attached to the job offer. Listed here is the process to follow for multi-term/continuing appointments for CUPE Unit 1:
Prepare the Notice of Continuing Appointment along with specific information pertaining to the Contract Lecturer (Note: DA to send the letter to Isiah Corpuz in the Office of the Dean for signature).
Create job openings for each term (do not specify posting dates so the posting is not public).
Link applicant to the job, prepare the job offer and save as draft.
Edit offer and upload/attach the Notice of Continuing Appointment letter to the job offer that you have already prepared for a specific Contract Lecturer. In this step you should add a description to the file you have uploaded.
Submit offer and letter for approval. Once approved, applicants will be notified.
Toronto Metropolitan University's HR Recruiting system includes job codes for replacement teaching contracts that fall within part-time CUPE Unit 1 thresholds. However, some replacement teaching assignments have exceeded the part-time threshold—ranging from reduced workload to full sessional loads (i.e., 3 to 5 sections). In these cases, eHR is unable to use proper replacement teaching job codes, resulting in a lack of tracking for such assignments. This gap has made it difficult for the TRSM Finance team to distinguish between original and replacement teaching, leading to mismatches between actual costs and original budgets.
To address this, HR has introduced two new job codes for replacement teaching:
C1FSRP – CUPE 1 Full Session Replacement
C1RSRP – CUPE 1 Reduced Session Replacement
Please note the following:
Existing job openings: These new job codes will not appear by default. If you are preparing an offer for a replacement teaching assignment linked to an existing job opening, you must manually add the appropriate job code and corresponding hours.
New job openings: Going forward, these job codes will be available for selection when using the CUPE 1 Lecturer job opening template.
Additionally, when assigning account codes, please do not use the standard part-time (6253) or sessional (6251) codes. Instead, use the following:
6256 – CUPE Teaching: Maternity Replacement
6257 – CUPE Teaching: Sick Leave Replacement

In these circumstances, the Contract Lecturer's teaching is deemed satisfactory. The letter must be copied to the Chair of the Department/Director of the School, the member's Service Record File, the Dean and the Union.
