Career TFA members are eligible for one new TMU-issued computer every four years, plus one computer purchased using PERF funds every four years, in line with the Ted Rogers School Technology Hardware Purchasing Policy. Full-time administrative staff are also eligible for one new TMU-issued computer every four years. Standard configurations are provided by the IT Department. Any deviations must be discussed with the Help Desk, Server Support Specialist, or the IT Director before ordering.
Orders for non-standard equipment—including servers, specialized workstations, and specialized printers—require financial approval and a departmental cost centre. Once approved, orders must go through the Help Desk and Server Support Specialist. For assistance selecting a suitable system, support is available.
Faculty and staff are encouraged to use central network printers whenever possible. For secure printing of confidential information, please refer to the Printing at Ted Rogers School section.
Purchasing IT equipment for Toronto Metropolitan University without consulting the IT Department is strongly discouraged to ensure compatibility and proper support. When buying equipment yourself, including with PERF Fund purchases, keep in mind the following important points:
Faculty members may receive up to two new computers every four years: one issued by Toronto Metropolitan University and one purchased using PERF funds. Computers bought with PERF funds are outside the regular refresh cycle and won’t be automatically updated. Users are not allowed to initiate their own computer refresh purchases.
Computers must include a minimum 3-year extended warranty to protect the University from costly repairs.
Do not purchase services or software available for free from TMU (e.g., computer setup, antivirus, Microsoft Office); these add-ons are unnecessary and won’t be reimbursed. Ask first if unsure.
The Ted Rogers School Help Desk only performs warranty repairs on Dell Latitude, Optiplex, and Precision models. Repairs for other brands must be handled directly with the manufacturer or retailer and may take longer.
Please remember that all equipment purchased using TMU funds, in whole or in part, remains the property of Toronto Metropolitan University, including equipment purchased with PERF funds. All purchases must be inventoried and tagged by the Help Desk before reimbursements will be processed.
