The setting of this image is the front of my house. The subjects in this image are my mom, dad, and brother. To create this image. I took the picture, developed the film, and used the negative to expose my paper. Instead of using a normal border, for this project I made a larger border. I chose to create this image because it is a classic family photo and I thought that I could frame it and hang it up in my house. An element of design in this image is value. This image has a large range of value. There are very bright whites where it looks like the image is overexposed. In other places, there are very dark greys or blacks. A composition technique used in this image is informal balance. Even though I was not going to be able to be in this image, I still had my brother sit off the right to make space for where I would sit. Compositional, I think that this makes the image more intriguing and shows that there is another member in the family. Another composition technique in this image is low key lighting. Even though there are very light parts of this image, I think that overall it is a very dark image. You can see this on my families faces; their faces are covered by shadows. By using low key lighting, I was able to get more rich greys and blacks. If I could change anything about this project, I would have enlarged a different image. I had 3 images like this one, but in the other ones, my family was being weird. At the time, the perfectionist in me came out and I wanted the more "normal" image. Now, I think the weird ones would have more accurately represented my family. The story behind this image is smiling can't hide everything. When you look closely at my families faces you can see that their smiles are fake. Their faces look stiff and not happy to be there. Even though you smile it doesn't mean your happy. I had one major challenge with this project. That was that my family did not want to take pictures. My dad was willing, but I basically had to drag my mom and brother outside. When they weren't cooperating it made it difficult to get exactly the images I had in mind.
