Analogous Color

Shovel

The subject of this image is a man shoveling snow. To edit this image I increased that saturation so the analogous colors stood out more. I also increased the light and contrast. I then brought the image into photoshop and used a gradient map for color selection. I decided to do this because there were so many other colors in the image that it was hard to focus on the analogous color. By using color selection I could pick out the yellow and green so that they became the focus of the image. An element of design in this image is color. The focus of this image is really on color. I wanted the eye to be drawn to those specific colors not only because they are analogous, but also because they help to tell the story of the image. A principle of design in this image is emphasis. There is a major emphasis on the shovel as well as the door. These two objects are important to tell the story portrayed by the image.A composition rule used in this image is informal balance. The weight of this image is carried mainly on the left half. This draws the eye to the left half of the image which is where the subject is. There is also the rule of thirds. The man is lined up on the one-third line. Even though the colorful shovel is in the middle of the image, your eye is drawn to the man because he is on the third line. A composition technique in this image is high key lighting. Even though the image is black and white, which makes you think the image would be dark, it is very bright. This photo was taken at night, so the source of light was coming from a lightbulb just out of frame. This creates a value change as you go from the top to the bottom of the image because most of the light is in the top of the image. I had a lot of difficulty with this project. I had come up with some ideas, but none of them were working. I first wanted to take a picture of my dad sitting next to a fire, but it was dark out when he got home. Then I tried to take a close up of my dog’s collar, because it is red and he is an orange tone, but my dog would just not cooperate. I then came up with this idea as I was walking inside from attempting to take a photo of my dog. This image tells an interesting story. To me, this represents all the times my dad has to go out and shovel our whole driveway by himself while the rest of my family sits inside. When I see this image I feel guilty because there have been so many times where I could have gone outside to help my dad, but I just didn’t. I also feel bad because he gets frustrated when he tries to snow blow and the snowblower breaks and he has to shovel. To other people, this image might make them feel different ways based on their winter experiences. If I could redo this project I think I would try one of my other photo ideas and see how those came out. With this specific image, I think I would it during the day because I was having a hard time getting the camera in focus because it was so dark.
