Artist Statement

The subject of this image is a house and a lawn. The setting of this image is a backyard. The photograph was taken by lining up part of the house in a third of the image and the roof of the house with the top of the frame. A specific element that made this image more impactful was the use of rule of thirds. By only putting a quarter of the whole house in the image you aren't drawn to the house, but the trees in the background. Another element of the image that makes it more interesting is that the house covers a third of the image and the rest of the image is in the background, which gives the image interesting layers. There are a few different composition rules and techniques in this image. The main composition rule in this image is rule of thirds. The house covers a main part of the image which, in a way, frames the background making it more effective. The image also includes soft focus which helps the colors in the background pop.

As I started taking images I was inspired by the color of the trees in front of my house. As I scouted the area for the perfect way to capture the trees I remembered that many of Deanna Dikeman's photos capture the edges of houses and the space between them. The reason I took the image in soft focus was so that the viewer's eye would be drawn to the more yellowy colors that have started to show as it is fall.

The image has a strong emphasis on the colors in the background. This relates to the lesson in life of looking on the bright side. The image has a very dull half, but it is heavy which can draw your eye to it. The other side is much lighter but more colorful. This represents looking on the bright side because the bright side "outweighs" the dark side. If I could change anything about my image it would be that the trees were more colorful. It is only the beginning of fall so the trees really haven't changed color yet. To change this I would have changed the time of year I took the image, but because I had a due date I was not able to do so.
