Animal Assemblage

The subject of my creation is a whale head on a mantle. I made this sculpture by making the skeleton with cardboard, then I built up the shape with newspaper and duck tape. And after I got the shape that I wanted I mod podged ocean images from old magazines on to the sculpture to add color. I also used plastic bags, plastic cups, and plastic straws to cover up the mantle piece. I chose to create this specific artwork because I wanted to give people an idea of the oceans sea life and the trash that we are putting into it.

I used a lot of hands on work to do this project especially when it came to glueing the photos on to the sculpture. I was planning on doing a full body whale but decided against it since I have never done sculpting before and I wanted to make it somewhat easier for me so I decided to just do a whale head.

The meaning behind my artwork is to raise awareness for the ocean and the trash that we are putting in it. This project relates to my life because I really like helping out the ocean and I do this by never throwing out plastic, instead me and my family collect plastic. And I hope to one day become a marine biologist so I can help the ocean and its sea life out even more. I think my project could be stronger if I made the nose shape of the whale a little bit better, but I really love how this project came out and i'm really proud of it.
