My inspiration for this piece was to create something that was 3D, I wanted to have 2 separate pieces of paper that I could somehow attach to each other to create a feel of the main figure jumping out of the page. My main goal was to portray the feeling of escaping, or being trapped, and trying to get out. I did this by keeping the background dark and limiting it to just graphite, with grey tones to show a more traditional style of art. Leaning towards drawing, with pencil and paper. While the figure jumping out shows me straying away from that, and even jumping out and away. The figure is full of color and contrast, directly being the opposite of the background. Relating to me through my illustration and 2D design art style.
Marker, Graphite, and paper on 9" x 12" watercolor paper.
My process was to first draw the figure in color on a piece of paper. Once I was done with that, I started the background on a separate piece of paper. I started with the sketches of the figures, which is a photo of me from an elevated point of view. After sketching and drawing those figures with graphite, I then added the grey marker background to make the background seem like a room. After that, I cut out the colored figure with an exacto knife, after making sure everything was as precise as I could make it. I then cut out rectangles of paper, folded them over a few times, and then used glue to stick the figure to the background page.
