My inspiration for the duck stamp was the King Eider, a sea duck that had a fascinating coloration on its head. I wanted to try to use oil pastels to create the interesting colors that the males have.
Oil pastels on 9" x 12" watercolor paper
My process was to first sketch out the duck once I found a reference, then I did the water surrounding the duck. And after that I started with the beak I did the other brighter colors. And finally finished with the lighter colors and the black.
