I have not got my head around this lettering yet, which is not being helped by some vague early imperf examples. There is a definite group where the second A is weak, but how many states does this cover? The end examples show a second A that is straight rather than tilted. Did they correct the tilt when re-cut or is this another plate completely?
State 1
This is the imp.
This looks to me to be a heavily inked early copy.
State 2
There is a blur right side and the top and stars appear to be slightly doubled. In some ways the doubling looks similar to 155 AA a above.
Poor copy. This is a dry print but looks to match 155 AA f above. Notice the thin tops to the top corners on the other stamps in the block.
State ?
This could be a worn state 2. Anything that could have identified this as state 2 is disappearing into nothing, yet the second A is still intact.
State 3?
State 4?
Impression has been restored. I believe that the second A has materially weakened when compared with 155 AA b above.
State 5? or misplate?
Second A re-cut. Slight blur to right.
As per above but this impression is very shallow with the background showing extreme wear. Paradoxically, the lines of the face and hair etc are still present. In addition, the colour of this example is right for the last printings of 155.
