State 1
General features of state 1:
Clockwise, starting in the NE corner.
NEX
The top of the corner square is fine.
The E side of the square is firmer at the extreme corner and weakens as it continues down. Compare the neighbouring examples showing on the imprimaturs, especially in the B row.
The side line opposite the top of the queens bun is broken.
At the base of the stamp, EXS strongly and BXE slightly. (Compare with the image of imp a).
Base and SW corner of the stamp is well drawn.
W side of the stamp is generally weak, especially 7th loop opposite Queen’s bust and very weak 2nd loop opposite forehead.
State 2
Clockwise, starting in the NE corner.
The NEX tends to appear more as a slight WXN.
The East side of the square is still fine, but is constant throughout it’s length. It has lost it’s ‘strong top – weakening to bottom’ appearance.
The major SE Ray has been thinned.
The side opposite the queen’s bun has been restored, though shows wear in later examples.
There is a shallow linear TRL down the right hand margin. This soon starts to disappear with wear.
EXS continues.
W side of stamp has been strengthened though the weaknesses reappear with wear.
State 3
The major SE ray in NE square has been restored.
Both side networks have been much strengthened, better in fact than the early state 2s above.
The NW corner lines are strengthened.
The overall impression is much firmer.
I suggest that a different roller was used for the repair.
There is a slight blur W of NW square which is constant with 5 AB p [ST] above. There is also a feint linear TRL next to AA opposite queens forehead.
