This was one of the original windows, fitted in July 1893, and is a memorial to the Parkers of Carr Lodge Park in Horbury. It shows Christ on the cross with Mary and St John. Mary is given a descriptive label reading “Stabat Mater”, the opening words of the ancient Latin hymn “Stabat Mater Dolorosa” describing Mary’s grief as she watches Jesus suffer. Jesus is described as “Spes Unica”, the only hope of humankind. The window includes depictions of the instruments of the Passion (echoed in the reredos beneath it). Amid the architectural detailing, typical of Kempe’s style, are shown angels holding the sun and moon; and the principal figures are set amid glowing colours and foliage, suggesting, perhaps, that resurrection and renewal follow pain.
