Ernest Taylor

Ernest was one of ten children of William and Elizabeth Taylor, of Orchard Croft, in St Mary’s parish. He was born about 1896 in Horbury. His father was a labourer in a sawmill.

Ernest was a Private in the 6th Battalion of the York and Lancaster Regiment (Service number 19388) and died of his wounds on 1st October 1916, aged 20. He is buried in Contay British Cemetery. Ernest was remembered in the November 1916 edition of St Mary’s church magazine. It was noted that he had fought in the Dardanelles, but fell at the Somme. He was ‘a general favourite’ who had sung in the choir and was a server at the altar.
