George Hawkins

George was born in Horbury in 1882, the son of Thomas and Amy Hawkins. In 1901 the family lived on Bulling Back Lane, in the parish of St Mary’s Horbury Junction. Thomas worked as a furnaceman in 1901 and George was a labourer at an ironworks.

George became a Private in the 1st Battalion of the Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) (Service Number 7189); he died on 22nd October 1914 and his body was never found – his name is recorded on the Ploegsteert Memorial as is that of John Dalton (see above). His death was remembered in the December 1914 edition of St Mary’s church magazine.
