A brief history of St Mary's

This is intended to tell you a little about our church and its history. In particular, it includes a description of what are probably the most notable features of the church, its stained glass windows, whose quality and character have been revealed by their recent conservation and cleaning. We hope that find these notes interesting, and that you might like to come and see us whilst we are open each Saturday from May to August, from 9:30am to 5:30pm.

Building history

These notes draw on the booklet “The Story of St Mary’s Church”, which was published in 1994, following the church’s centenary, and which is based on archive sources and parish records. I am also indebted to Mrs Esther Harris, lately Reader of St Mary’s, who had a special interest in the windows, and who wrote a set of notes describing them. We disagree occasionally over who is shown in those windows where the records which might confirm the subject are lost. If readers have any suggestions or corrections to offer, I will be glad to hear from them, and changes can be made to these notes.
