Joseph Wales

Joseph was one of five children of Joseph and Martha Wales, of Forge Cottages, Horbury Junction, in St Mary’s parish. He was born about 1880 in Wombwell and in 1901 he worked as an under-paddler in the same iron works as his father.

Joseph was a Private in the 9th Battalion. of the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry (Service number 18761) and died on 16th September 1916, having been injured ‘in the great attack’ the day after Flers (on the Somme) was captured and in which tanks were used for the first time. He is buried in the A.I.F. Burial Ground, Flers. His death was remembered in the August 1916 edition of St Mary’s church magazine.
