Harry Schofield

Harry Schofield was born in 1888, one of 3 children of George and Elizabeth Schofield of Stringer Lane. By the age of 13 Harry was working in a woollen mill, but by his mid twenties he had gone to war as a Private in the 1st / 5th Battalion of the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry (Service number 2769). Harry was wounded in battle, and he was repatriated to a hospital in Yorkshire; but while he was recovering from his injuries he contracted pneumonia and died on 20th May 1916. His death was remembered in the August 1916 edition of St Mary’s church magazine, when thanks were expressed that his parents had been able to see him before he passed away and could thereafter visit his grave in Horbury Cemetery.
