Harry Whittlestone

Harry was one of five children of Walter and Martha Whittlestone of the Green, Flockton. He was born about 1885 and in 1901 worked as a coal miner (as was his father).

Harry was a Private in the 6th Battalion of the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry (Service number 12106) and died on 15th August 1915. He has no known grave, having fallen in the second battle of Ypres. His name (like Preston Varley’s) is commemorated on Panel 47 of the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial.

Harry’s brother Hilton also perished in WW1. He was a Private in the 2nd Battalion of the Royal Munster Fusiliers, and was killed on 27th August 1914.
