Horace Heywood

Horace was born in Denby Grange in 1890, the son of Charles and Mary Heywood. In 1901 the family lived on Stringer Lane, in the parish of St Mary’s Horbury Junction. Father Charles worked as a Coal Hewer in 1901. By 1915 Horace lived at 19 George Street, off Cluntergate, next door to Harry Hirst (see below).

Horace was a Private in the 1st/4th Battalion of the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry (Service number 3040) and, according to the Wakefield Express of 21st December 1918, he died of gas poisoning on 19th December 1915 – probably in the battles in the northern sectors of the Ypres Salient. He is buried at Bard Cottage Cemetery, just outside Ypres.
