Fred Smith

Fred was one of five children of Charles and Margaret Smith of School Yard, Horbury, in St Peter’s parish. He was born about 1887, and by 1901 he had left school and was working as a steam hammer driver at the railway wagon works. He married Alice Smith at St Mary’s in April 1908 and had had a child by the time of his death. Fred was a communicant at St Mary’s and his last act before death was to take communion in hospital on the island of Malta (as detailed in the November 1915 edition of St Mary’s magazine).

Fred was a Private in the 8th Battalion of the Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment) (Service number 15492) and died on 5th October 1915. He is buried in Pieta Military Cemetery on Malta having been in the hospital where many soldiers wounded in the campaigns in Gallipoli and Salonika were taken.
