Preston Varley

Preston was born about 1878 in Harrogate and by 1901 he was boarding in Wortley, Leeds, and working as a corporation labourer. There was a considerable ‘Varley’ presence in Wortley and Horbury at that time.

Preston was a Private in the 6^th Battalion of the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry (Service number 18761) and died on 15^th August 1915. He has no known grave, having fallen during the second battle of Ypres. His name is commemorated on Panel 47 of the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial.
