Preston Varley

Preston was born about 1878 in Harrogate and by 1901 he was boarding in Wortley, Leeds, and working as a corporation labourer. There was a considerable ‘Varley’ presence in Wortley and Horbury at that time.

Preston was a Private in the 6th Battalion of the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry (Service number 18761) and died on 15th August 1915. He has no known grave, having fallen during the second battle of Ypres. His name is commemorated on Panel 47 of the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial.
