Harry Hirst

According to the Wakefield Express of 7th September 1918 Harry Hirst lived at 17 George Street, off Cluntergate, next door to Horace Heywood.Harry was born in Wakefield and enlisted in Dewsbury and became an Acting Bombardier in the 72nd Battery / 38th Brigade of the Royal Field Artillery (Service number 84699). He died of his wounds on 1st September 1917 – probably following shelling of his artillery position during the third battle of the Ypres, and he is buried at The Huts Cemetery. The cemetery is just to the South West of Ypres - nearly two-thirds of the burials are of gunners as many artillery positions existed nearby.
