Walter Littleton

Walter was born in Horbury in 1881, the son of William and Mary Littleton, of Forge Cottages, in the parish of St Mary’s Horbury Junction. William and Walter both worked as Iron Heaters in 1901 and Walter was married in 1910. According to the Wakefield Express of 5th August 1916, by 1916 Walter was living on Daw Lane with his wife and three children.

Walter was a Private in the 1st Battalion of the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry (Service number 7188) and died on 20th July 1916 – probably in fierce fighting near Delville Wood (a tract of woodland, nearly 1 kilometre square, on the western edge of the village of Longueval in the Somme). He is buried at Delville Wood Cemetery, Longueval.
