Saiyan Transformations

When facing dangers that would normally overcome normal opponents, some Saiyans have the ability to instantly increase their power dramaticly. It is unknown how the Saiyans developed this unusual natural ability or if there is ever a limit to how powerful a Saiyan can become, but so far twelve different variations have been discovered.

Many Saiyans live and die without ever achieving even the lowest of the Super Saiyan levels, but many would kill to have it. According to Saiyan records, it is beleived that a special bloodline carries the ability to change into a Super Saiyan, but that bloodline was dispersed many centuries ago. Freeza's best scientists theorized that the Super Saiyan bloodline was just the result of a random mutation, and if that is true, then other similar mutations could still occur.

NORMAL (Tsûjô)

In the original DB anime, we never seen who is a member of the Saiyan race? We first discover that Goku is indeed a Saiyan with the arrival of Raditz on Earth, Goku's older brother (and by means, Bardock's eldest son). Raditz explains that Goku is one of four (eight if you count) remaining Saiyans (Goku, Raditz, Nappa, Vegeta, Broli, Paragus, Tullece, and Tarble). The Saiyans are a fighting race that eventually took over their home planet ("Planet Vegeta") from the technologically advanced but physically weak Tsufuru-jin (Tuffle) race which the Saiyans themselves seek refuge from their original home world destruction at the hands of the out of control Legendary Super Saiyan. The Saiyans were later employed by Freeza to take over planets, exterminating any life forms on them. Hired mercenaries, you could call them. Saiyans are outwardly very similar to any other average humans, with the exception of their monkey-like tails and a larger muscular build. They are commonly seen to have deep black hair although there have been rare occasions when they have also been shown to have brown hair. In the episode "Saiyans Emerge",Vegeta states that the hair of a pure-blooded Saiyan does not deviate from its appearance the day the Saiyan is born however, their hair can fall off, as hair composition varies from Saiyan to Saiyan,

Every Saiyan has the ability to transform (especially Ôzaru), but this does not necessarily mean that they all transform at all, never mind to all stages!

NOTE: I added Tarble since he's Vegeta youngest brother (see Jump Anime 2008 for more).

OOZARU (GREAT APE) (Ôzaru)

Their tail also grants a Saiyan special transformations. Though a painful weak-spot for lower-class Saiyans (most upper-class Saiyans appear to have trained to eliminate the weakness), the tail allows a Saiyan to transform into a giant Oozaru beast with tremendous power when looking at a full moon. The Saiyan grows incredibly in size and tenfold in strength while drastically changing in appearance. If the tail is removed, this ability is lost. In this state, some Saiyans have limited control, but their aggressiveness is at its peak and they often become mindless animals fueled by destructive rage. When a Saiyan absorbs at least 17,000,000 Zeno of moon-reflected sunlight, a reaction occurs in their tails which begins the transformation! The Oozaru form is said to increase the power of the Saiyan by ten. However,  if the tail is removed, this ability is lost , or destroying the source of the "Zeno" (being the moon). In this stage, both Goku and Gohan are completely mindless in their aggression and attacks; Kuririn theorizes that perhaps they don't lose their minds, but possibly regain some of their "Saiyan savagery." Vegeta, however, always seems to be in complete control of himself and his power while in the form (we assume this is due to excessive training).

QUASI-SUPER SAIYAN (FALSE SUPER SAIYAN) (Giji Sûpâ Saiyajin)

We might know that this ideas can't be crazy. This from,

"Quasi-Super Saiyan" is a rareest transformation in the SSJ line. It actually never named in the movie (But this form is a different form of Super Saiyan (created for the movie) and is known as the False Super Saiyan), as it is a supposed prequel to the actual Super Saiyan form; instead, it comes from Daizenshuu # 7. ("Giji" means "false" or "pseudo-" or "quasi-".) This is more-or-less an instance of Toei covering its own mistake by calling it a "new form," but this form was originally labeled as the true Super Saiyan form, but later re-labled as Giji or "False" Super Saiyan after the actual Super Saiyan form was introduced in the manga series.

In this form, Goku's irises and pupils are no longer visible, mostly in turn to the power and bleak rage. His body bulks up a little, his hair straightens like that of a Super Saiyan, his skin color also appears to have a yellow hue to it, but there is no considerable change in feature other than a red tint to his hair. He gains a yellowish surge of aura, somewhat but not quite resembling that of a normal Super Saiyan's. In turn, the form somewhat resembles a glorified Kaio-ken form, but there are notable differences.

But a similar misconception involves Goku's "semi-Super Saiyan" state during the filler anime episode, Warriors of the Dead. In this case, however, it was a last-minute decision to keep Goku's Super Saiyan powers hidden from Paikuhan rather than a simple coincidence, thus his hair was digitally altered from gold to black and his eyes from green to black. (In the original Japanese promo for the episode, Goku's hair turns gold and eyes turn green.) The aura was oddly untouched.

While fighting Slug (and nearly beaten to a pulp), Goku suddenly throws a hand forward and catches Slug's punch. As Goku looks up, we see the Super Saiyan power manifest itself as a golden aura surrounding Goku. It is obviously more than just Goku using Kaiô-Ken; besides the golden aura, his (black) hair stands on end, his pupils disappear, and (similar to his actual first SSJ transformation), he does not seem to exercise complete control, with the brute force and anger pulling through.

SUPER SAIYAN (Sûpâ Saiyajin; commonly "SSJ" or "SSJ1")

The ability to become a Super Saiyan was once considered to be nothing but a mere legend, because it had not been performed for over 1000 years. However, this was proven true when Goku accomplished the feat during the titanic battle against the evil tyrant Freeza on the Planet Namek. Despite only being told through legend, Freeza, considered to be the strongest being of his time, became paranoid over the possibility of truth behind the legend of the Super Saiyan, as evidenced by the constantly growing power of the Saiyan race. Because of this fear, Freeza drew the conclusion to annihilate the Saiyan race by destroying Planet Vegeta, thus sparking the end of the Super Saiyan legend.Goku is the first to go through the transformation into a Super Saiyan. It is widely speculated that the Sentô Ryoku ("combat strength," or if you must, "power level") of the character must be around 180,000, which Goku reaches on Namek; this cannot be confirmed or denied, however (it's merely speculation). The transformation into a Super Saiyan is generally caused by an overwhelming sense of rage and hatred.

At first, Freeza kills Piccolo, then Kuririn, then Gohan? Well, you guess it. Goku achieves the form out of anger over the murder of his best-friend, Kuririn , and Vegeta achieves the form through sheer frustration at his original inability to achieve it, especially over Goku.

The most noticeable change is that the Saiyan's hair becomes golden in color and seems to stand on end, giving it a rising, flame-like appearance. Natural eye color temporarily changes to a greenish-blue, muscle tone becomes more defined, and the skin tone (and clothing) becomes lighter mainly due to the energy and light output of the golden aura. As the natural floodgates of the body are opened with the transformation, excess energy is radiated from the body in the form of a pulsing, flame-like aura. There is also a marked personality alteration, where the Saiyan becomes unusually aggressive and more prone to acting on impulse. The first character to achieve the Super Saiyan transformation in the series, is Goku, in the midst of engaging Frieza.

The Super Saiyan transformations of the two children, Goten and Trunks, come under great debate. Goten and Trunks were able to transform around the same time; Goten at 7 years of age, and Trunks at 8 years of age. Many people believe that Goku and Vegeta passed on a different kind of DNA to these children, since both of them had achieved SSJ by the time of conception. Perhaps their tail removal, at birth, also had some kind of play in unleashing their dormant power ahead of other characters (who did not have their tails removed until much later). Regardless, their feats remain amazing to all.

In the main series, all living Saiyan-blooded males following the Frieza Saga manage to reach at least the first level of Super Saiyan. Akira Toriyama's reason for never having any female Super Saiyans was that neither Pan nor Bra had the incentive to transform, and that he never drew female Super Saiyans because he couldn't figure out what they would look like. The Dragon Ball GT Perfect Files implies that Pan has the potential to transform and might have become a type of Super Saiyan never seen before. The daizenshuu was written long before GT was nearing this part of the series; they had no way of knowing just what direction the show would take. GT's showing Goku Jr. and Vegeta Jr. going SSJ kills off the "diluted" blood theory.

"BEYOND" or "ULTRA" SUPER SAIYAN (USSJ/ASSJ) (ASCENDED SUPER SAIYAN / ULTRA SUPER SAIYAN) ("ichi-dankai no henshin;" transformations of the first stage)

This stage appears similar to that of a Super Saiyan, with subtle differences. The flowing, golden hair becomes slightly more rigid and pales in color. Muscle mass also heavily increases, but not enough however to weigh the user down and reduce mobility (unlike the next stage of Super Saiyan, Ultra Super Saiyan), and the Saiyan retains their agility. The aura increases in size and becomes more jagged, accompanied by bio-electrical discharge during transformation or when preparing a massive attack such as the Final Flash. The aggressive, remorseless behavior of the initial transformation is magnified; any control over emotion brought on by increased proficiency of the Super Saiyan transformation is canceled out, and energy requirement to sustain the state becomes enormous when compared to the regular Super Saiyan state, thus reducing its effectiveness. This deficiency forced Goku, and in turn Vegeta and Trunks to discard the form. The first note to make would be that "USSJ" is nothing more than a fan term. However, it's extremely convenient to type out, so for this reason we will use it as an abbreviation. The actual Japanese wording is explained shortly below.

For a bit of extra history, the phrase "USSJ" was coined by a man named Curtis Hoffman in 1993. Back before FUNimation even owned the license to distribute the series in North America, Hoffman (just a fan of the series looking to share his love) wrote out extensive summaries of the DB tankôbon and even DBGT episodes as they aired in Japan. In the introduction to these summaries, Hoffman would list new characters and forms that make their first appearance. In order to differentiate forms that may not have an official name yet (not being named by characters, and there not yet being any official information guides), Hoffman decided to name the power-ups within the standard SSJ stage as "Ultra Saiya-jin". As Hoffman shared his summaries on his own website (Three Steps Over The Edge) and then later as a part of the website toriyama.org, these types of phrases became slightly adapted and treated as standard verbiage among English-speaking fans. This naming convention has obviously held true to this very day.

There are actually two stages within the "USSJ" stage, really just varying levels of the same exact thing. In the first stage, the muscles increase in size, while power rises. In the second stage, the muscles increase in size even more, the power rises even more, speed falls, and with some characters, the pupils disappear. In each of the those stages, more energy is consumed, as well. Three characters reach these stages; you'll find special information, by character, a little further down. The USSJ stages (two of them) would each be considered, as Goku puts it in the original Japanese dialogue, "ichi-dankai no henshin" ("transformations of the first stage"). However, these two USSJ stages are thought of by Vegeta and Trunks as "Sûpâ Saiya-jin dai ni-dankai" and "Sûpâ Saiya-jin dai san-dankai" ("stage 2 / stage 3 of Super Saiyan," with "ni" and "san" meaning "two" and "three," respectively) Technically, these descriptions would probably better fit the actual SSJ2 and SSJ3, but we'll use them here as Vegeta & Trunks would.

    * Sûpâ Saiya-jin dai ichi-dankai (the normal Super Saiyan, or SSJ1) (SUPER SAIYAN)

    * Sûpâ Saiya-jin dai ni-dankai (USSJ 1; the second stage of SSJ1) (ASCENDED SUPER SAIYAN)

    * Sûpâ Saiya-jin dai san-dankai (USSJ 2; the third stage of SSJ1) (ULTRA SUPER SAIYAN)

Also note the hair slightly growing in length, and standing much more up on end. The hair is straighter on end in USSJ2 than in USSJ1; you can see the back hairs more clearly in USSJ2 than in USSJ1, even from a straight-on, frontal view.

To start off, Vegeta and Mirai Trunks first achieve this stage while training in the Room of Spirit and Time. Vegeta uses this state to battle Cell in his Semi-Perfect form, the result of his absorbing Jinzoninigen #17. It is suggested that Vegeta has at least more than tripled his strength as a Super Saiyan while harnessing this form, though most of it is credited to his extensive training in the Room of Spirit and Time, in which he spends ten additional months to the two months it took for him to attain this stage, to train himself further. Also, as he stated that Future Trunks is as strong as him to Semi-Perfect Cell (something that Mirai Trunks later states when he tries to stop Cell when his father fails to stop him), it's also likely that Future Trunks has achieved a similar increase in strength in this form. This is notably showcased when Vegeta reigned dominance during the fight, to the point where Cell begins begging for his life and for Vegeta to show him mercy and eventually even allows him to absorb Jinzoningen #18. Vegeta's pride, overconfidence and lust for a greater challenge get the best of him, and he allows Cell to absorb Jinzoningen #18. However, when Cell becomes perfect, the tables are quickly turned against the favor of the Saiyan. Vegeta proves to be no match for Perfect Cell and, despite his best efforts and Final Flash technique, he is quickly defeated with a single kick to the face that knocks him hurdling towards the sky, before being knocked out by a simple elbow drop to the back. Future Trunks then battles in this form for only a few moments (in the manga he is kicked away before doing anything in the stage by Vegeta), before powering up to the USSJ2 stage.

Goku achieves this form in the Room of Spirit and Time as well, along with Trunks' own Ultra Super Saiyan state immediately. He demonstrates this ability to Gohan before transforming into an Ultra Super Saiyan, shortly after which he realizes the vulnerabilities of these stages. This form is seen again when Vegeta and Mirai Trunks battle the Cell Juniors, but its power is only sufficient to fight on par with the miniature clones, the rapid energy consumption eventually bringing the Saiyans' downfall. They are, however, relieved in their battle by Gohan in his Super Saiyan 2 state, who dispatches every single Cell Junior with effortless blows.Believing that he surpassed his father Vegeta in strength, Mirai Trunks ascends to the USSJ2 form to combat Perfect Cell at the behest of Vegeta's defeat. Although he manages to hold his own for some time, he too is unable to defeat Cell because of his inability to maintain equality in speed. Because of his inexperience with these transformations, Future Trunks does not realize that his bulky form would be an inhibitor of his ability to battle, a characteristic that is later noted by both Goku and Cell. Mirai Trunks assumes that Vegeta is aware of this as well, believing this to be the reason Vegeta doesn't use the form.

Cell displays a similar ability to bulk up his muscles when he mocked Mirai Trunks for using it. When Cell fights Gohan in his Super Saiyan 2 form, he ends up losing his temper and resorts to using his slow, Power Weighted form, which fails to help him win the battle.

This form is considered to be physically stronger than Super Saiyan 2 in terms of ki sensations, and if brute strength were all that mattered in a fight (e.g. an arm wrestling contest), this form would be better suited. Merely the speed loss and ki consumption make it anything short of perfect.

Cell twice showcases a form very similar to this. Very shortly after Trunks transforms into USSJ2 after Vegeta is defeated, Cell mocks him and his reliance on "brute force," and bulks up, himself. Later on, after SSJ2 Gohan pushes back Cell's giant Kamehameha with ease, Cell makes the exact same mistake that Vegeta and Trunks earlier made; he gets incredibly bulky in muscle size, which increases his strength... but drastically reduces his speed. Does Cell actually go USSJ? It makes sense, but ultimately, it's left up to the reader/viewer to decide...! For more information, check out Cell's own transformations page.

FULL-POWER SUPER SAIYAN (FPSSJ) (Sûpâ Saiyajin Furu Pawâ)

Whether there are intended to be physical differences in a Full-Power Super Saiyan from those of a standard Super Saiyan is debatable because most of the physical differences can easily be explained as changes in Toriyama's artwork as the series continued. The only confirmed difference is that the Saiyan's facial features exhibit less tension and ferocity than the regular Super Saiyan form, which can be explained by the mastery over the ki consumption and the emotional restlessness that the regular Super Saiyan transformation causes. The aura is also noted to be different. Whether or not it was by accident, the aura is also seen to be less violent than the second and third grades of the Super Saiyan, but not as gentle and flame-like as the original form as seen in the manga series. The state first appears in the 193rd chapter of the Dragon Ball manga, "The Balance of Power", when Goku witnesses and experiences the substantial flaws of the advanced Super Saiyan stages. Goku decides not to train again to defeat Cell, but rather to spend the time having a common life in Super Saiyan state to control that transformation without becoming weaker, as complete mastery of the original Super Saiyan form is the best way to advance his abilities, and ultimately achieve greater power. As a result, he focuses on training his body to suppress the negative effects of the Super Saiyan form, such as ki consumption and personality alterations. This state could only be achieved in a much less strenuous manner than Vegeta and Future Trunks' forcible attempts to advance.

In the real world, athletes who train in aerobics for extensive periods of time experience heightened states of rest: heart and respiratory rate are much lower than that of a normal person. The Super Saiyan transformation follows a similar fundamental concept. By remaining transformed for extended periods of time, the Super Saiyan can desensitize themselves to the negative effects of the transformation. Their wild emotions are kept in check, resulting in a more strategical fighting style, and ki consumption is reduced to negligible amounts. Energy radiation is reduced in tandem, and the aura takes on a smoother, flow-like appearance. By mastering the transformation, the Super Saiyan is able to retain transformation almost subconsciously. In requiring less ki to contribute to maintaining the transformation itself, the maximum amount of ki can thus be focused into the attacks giving the user access to power greater than that of even an Ascended Super Saiyan. The key to the Full-Power Super Saiyan state is energy conservation rather than boosted energy output. This results in a Saiyan who is able to fight longer and more efficiently than with the Ascended and Ultra stages of Super Saiyan, and can even remain transformed for days without powering down as long they don't expend too much energy, essentially making the transformation the Saiyan's base form. Following the creation of this concept and the introduction of SSJ2, the second and third stages of Super Saiyan are rendered obsolete.

Goku and Gohan are the first to achieve this state while spending time training in the Room of Spirit and Time. The next time we see Goku and Gohan is when they emerge from the Room of Spirit and Time... as Super Saiyans. Vegeta states, ""You're missing the point. It's not about powering up. The point is that they won't have to power up, when they fight. They can use all the energy it would take to transform to increase their stamina and then, only go higher if they need to. Darn, it's so ingenious!".

During Cell's tournament: The Cell Games, Goku battles Perfect Cell in what seems to be an even fight, with no apparent advantage on either side. Eventually, Goku forfeits the match and has Gohan step up in his place. Cell initially has an advantage over the young Super Saiyan, mostly because of Gohan's gentle nature and thus his refusal to go all-out, and begins to goad Gohan into utilizing his full strength (something Goku was counting on when he ended his own fight). After Cell unleashed seven Cell Jr. clones of himself to attack the Z Fighters, Gohan withstood less and less of the torture and his anger began to rise. It wasn't until Cell killed the peace-loving Jinzoningen #16 that Gohan lost all self-control over himself and transformed into a Super Saiyan 2.

NOTE: This term "Super Saiyan Full Power" was shown and labeled on Daizenshuu 2 (it appears nowhere in the manga). It also notes that Goku's aura, while his Super Saiyan power is drawn out to its limits, is "different." There is no indication that either Goku and/or Gohan have reached their "maximum power" while in this stage; in fact, that's quite an outlandish claim to make. There is always room for improvement.

LEGENDARY SUPER SAIYAN (LSSJ) (Densetsu no Sûpâ Saiyajin)

DBZ movie eight: Broly: The Legendary Super Saiyan takes a few liberties with the canon transformations sequence and adds its own, new stage: densetsu no sûpâ saiya-jin, or "Legendary Super Saiyan." Only Broli is able to use this form (it being the basis for the entire movie, and all)."Legendary" form seems most similar to USSJ2, with disappearing pupils and ridiculously large muscle bulk. The benefits of this stage are much different from the USSJ stages, however... that being there aren't any drawbacks! Broli's speed and strength seem to only increase as he powers up through the "Legendary" stage.

The Legendary Super Saiyan's appearance is quite distinguishable from the regular forms of Super Saiyan. The legendary Super Saiyan's hair color is greenish-yellow. When he reappears in Broly: Second Coming movie, his hair color has a slightly greenish-yellow tint; much less of a tint than in Broly: The Legendary Super Saiyan. In this form, Broli's pupils and irises become seemingly invisible, making him look much more maniacal than he already is. The most noticeable difference between the form of the LSSJ and the regular SSJ is the body size. When Broly transforms into the Legendary Super Saiyan, his body grows in height and his muscle mass greatly increases, making it similar in appearance to the USSJ2 transformation. However, unlike the USSJ2, Broli's size does not affect his speed. There are still many arguments as to who really is "the Super Saiyan of legend" (not the suggested form). It's obvious that Broli is the so called "Legendary" Super Saiyan because of his odd, yet astounding power, but on the other hand, Goku reaches almost all of the known levels of the Super Saiyan forms (apart from the Legendary Super Saiyan, for obvious reasons). Throughout the series, there have been many different stories about the true legend, some very different from others. However, we'll never truly know who is the Super Saiyan of legend.

Broli's appetite for destruction also seems to increase with this stage; he greatly enjoys all of the pain he causes.

NOTES: This special form (attributed only to Broli) is literally named "densetsu no sûpâ saiyajin," as labeled in the sixth daizenshuu ("MOVIES & TV SPECIALS").

SUPER SAIYAN 2 (SSJ2) (Sûpâ Saiyajin Tsû)

Because of the intense emotion required to initiate the transformation, any mastery of the Full-Power Super Saiyan state, and mental stability attained therein, is negated, and the naturally remorseless nature of the Saiyan race is magnified, requiring them to remaster the personality changes. Even the gentle, polite Gohan becomes a hotheaded, merciless fighter after transforming, opting to torture Cell rather than kill him despite his father's pleas. While training with Gohan in the Room of Spirit and Time, Goku becomes almost obsessed with having his son take over the reins as Earth's protector. Realizing the incredible, but dormant, power lying within his son, Goku pushes Gohan to his absolute limits (and in the anime even sees a quick glimpse of this power, which quickly disappears just as fast as it came).Ultimately, the destruction wrought by Cell leads to Gohan's actual transformation into Super Saiyan 2. After destroying Jinzôningen #16, Cell unleashes seven "Cell Jrs." on the fighters. As Gohan watches in horror, too weak to do anything, as his friends are attacked, Mr. Satan tosses #16's decapitated head over to Gohan. #16 tells Gohan that he understands how he is feeling, but he needs to let it all out. It is time to protect the nature that he loved so much, and to protect his family and friends that he loved even more. When Cell crushes #16's head, Gohan's vision becomes completely clear. Belting out a scream from the depths of Hell, Gohan literally explodes into Super Saiyan 2 with tears in his eyes, determined to kill Cell.

Super Saiyan 2's most defining characteristic is the lightning that constantly surrounds and crackles around the character. The hair also stands much more on end (growing a little bit, as well). For Gohan and Goku, a single strand of hair falls over the eyes (since Vegeta's hair all stands up straight, anyway, this doesn't happen).

In the Gameboy Advance game Dragon Ball Z: The Legacy of Goku II, this form is incorrectly named "Super Saiyan Rage". This was however fixed in its sequel, in which Gohan states it to be a form "far beyond that of Super Saiyan," and Goku labels it "what you could call a Super Saiyan 2." It is however not playable in a different fashion like in the previous game, whereas Super Saiyan 3 is. This was stated to be so because it looks so similar to the original form in the anime that it's almost difficult to distinguish it from its predecessor; Gotenks' lack of usage of this form may have also been a cause of the lack of interest for its playability, since he uses both Super Saiyan 1 and 3, but never transforms into this form to fight.

SUPER SAIYAN 3 (SSJ3) (Sûpâ Saiyajin Surî)

Super Saiyan 3 is the strongest of all Saiyan forms in Toriyama's manga canon. This form is unique compared to the other forms because of the fact that it doesn't require intense emotion to transform, only increased ki capacity. It is technically a forced transformation, like Super Saiyan 2nd and 3rd Stage, but its substantial increase allows it to be considered a true transformation. The transformation causes stark changes in physical appearance. The trademark characteristic of the transformation is the hair: the rigid hair of the Super Saiyan 2 state becomes flowing and smooth again, and grows down to or sometime passes the user's waist. The eyebrows vanish completely, making the forehead and eye ridges appear larger and revealing a more prominent brow ridge. A small increase in muscle mass is evident, and muscle tone is sharply defined. Energy radiation is so great that the aura pulses at an extremely high frequency, almost to the point where it seems static; the sound of the aura is also pitched even higher than that of Super Saiyan 2.

Bio-electricity, like in the Super Saiyan 2 form, is again constant, and may reach further outward from the body than before. The Saiyan's voice may become slightly deeper, though this is obviously a feature only found in the anime. There is no personality change, as no emotion is required to initiate the transformation (Goku acted stoic to intimidate Babidi and Majin Buu, and Gotenks acted as he normally would). Another notable change is that the user seems to "glow" while in this state, more so than before, where the skin and clothes color were lightened a bit, but not as much as the color change of this form (this mostly applies to training gi).

The reasons for achieving SSJ3 are not actually noted, but seem to be attained by either incredible training for extended periods of time (Goku), or a combination of training and natural "magical" strength (Gotenks).

Interestingly, Broli and Vegeta never used SSJ3 forms in the series. But on Dragon Ball: Raging Blast, both of them transformed in a what-if scenario.

Broli's Super Saiyan 3 transformation retains some Legendary Super Saiyan traits such as the greenish tint in his hair. Though this is officially a Super Saiyan 3 form, some fans incorrectly refer to Broly's form by the name "Legendary Super Saiyan 3" due to the fact that Goku in one of the early trailers for Raging Blast saying "Densetsu Supa Saiyajin suri" which translates to "Legendary Super Saiyan 3.

GOLDEN OOZARU (GOLDEN GREAT APE) (Ôgon Ôzaru)

The power of the Golden Oozaru multiplies manyfold, which far surpasses that of a Oozaru's in all areas. While in this state, the power and strength of a Saiyan increases drastically. They have the same abilities as the Ôzaru, only even more powerful and destructive, and their rage's peak goes so high, that they can cause major destruction. Their berserk condition also increases to the point of becoming uncontrollable; in this state, Goku was more than a match for Baby, but was unable to focus on fighting him. Baby, while still inside of Vegeta, transformed into this state, and could use ki blast attacks while in this Golden Ôzaru transformation.Golden Oozaru looks identical to regular Oozaru except for the golden fur, rather (as opposed to) than brown / black. Also, the Golden Oozaru may have been a take on Vegeta's story of the legendary Super Saiyan (which was The Original Super Saiyan) given in Dragon Ball Z. While there were many Super Saiyans, it is said that the last one could only maintain its transformation while transformed into Oozaru state, thus his own power destroyed him.And if you looked closely enough when he tells the story then you can see that the Oozaru's fur is gold (shown on the left side). Hence, the Super Saiyan/Golden Oozaru. So it might be a combination of both in DBGT when his strength is only increased because of the Super Saiyan transformations .In A Legend Revealed, when Vegeta believes that Goku has become a Super Saiyan, a Oozaru is shown in a cutscene while he describes the legend. The lighting in the scene makes it difficult to tell whether it is a Golden Oozaru or the weaker, regular form although it could be a Golden Oozaru because it has Super Saiyan-esque hair which a Oozaru does not possess. SUPER SAIYAN 4 (SSJ4) (Sûpâ Saiyajin Fô)

The next generation of the Super Saiyan Forms! Super Saiyan 4 is a Saiyan form present only in the anime sequel Dragon Ball GT, and it has never been mentioned or hinted in the manga at all (as it isn't mentioned in the manga canon). The only way a Saiyan can attain Super Saiyan 4 is if he is already a Super Saiyan, can transform into a Golden Oozaru and regain conscious control over the form. This transformation is the ultimate combination of both the humanoid Super Saiyan and the Golden Oozaru. After this form is attained once, it can be accessed at any point. It is also hinted that only pure-blooded Saiyans can achieve this final and ultimate Super Saiyan transformation, as Baby had full consciousness while as a Golden Oozaru, but he still did not transform. However, Baby was a parasite, possibly halting the final evolution. The result of controlling the power within the Golden Oozaru form, the power and speed Super Saiyan 4 brings forth is incredible, even to our Z-Senshi. Instead of turning gold, the hair returns to a black color, but still grows a bit (a length in between SSJ2 and SSJ3; not quite all the way down the back). Red fur covers the body, and the tail from the Oozaru form is retained. Interestingly, pants are magically grown, and in the case of Goku, the character is returned to full adult form if otherwise (such as being wished back into a child). It seems to be very similar to the dance-type fusion, in this respect.Goku is able to reach Super Saiyan 4 on New Planet Tsufuru by finally controlling himself and his power while in Golden Oozaru. Vegeta, on the other hand, somewhat cheats to reach this level. Bulma creates a machine that shoots Bruits Waves, and uses it on Vegeta. Vegeta turns into Golden Oozaru and appears to lose control until he grabs "Kakarrot"... controls his power, and turns into Super Saiyan 4.In this sense, it can be assumed that Super Saiyan 4 is the evolved form of Oozaru (which many have speculated means it is the true "Legendary Super Saiyan"). However, Vegeta states in the Namek arc from Ep. 66:"According to Legend, the last Super Saiyan could maintain his status in the transformed state. His power was extraordinary, he had no equal in the universe. But he was too primitive to control it, his rage burned so intensely that eventually consumed him. In the end, it's destroyed by his own power."

You may also see this stage written out as "Super (Character) 4." This can even be seen in games such as Final Bout on the PlayStation. Rest assured, however, that the original Japanese dialogue does indeed refer to the stage, flat out, as "Sûpâ Saiya-jin 4." You may also see "Super (Character) 3," referring to Super Saiyan 3. Note that earlier on in DBZ, "Super (Character)" and "Super (Character) 2" were meant to refer to the USSJ stage, and not Super Saiyan 2; it all gets extremely confusing!

Unlike the Super Saiyan 3's strain due to the utilization in ki, this form does not require as much energy consumption as Super Saiyan 3's, allowing the user to stay in the state at a much longer duration. It also appears that the form makes the individual larger in height and muscularity. In scenes with Goku standing next to others such as Gohan, Goten and Trunks, Goku appears much taller and bulkier than all of them, even though in his normal state, he is relatively the same size. A highly debated subject, many fans believe the Super Saiyan 4 form to be the true form of the Legendary Super Saiyan, first spoke of by Vegeta in the Frieza Saga. Vegeta states in his monologue, that "the Super Saiyan could only maintain his maximum power in the transformed state".

It is interesting that all the Super Saiyan forms have gold hair, and the Super Saiyan 4 form does not. This could be a different type of Saiyan transformation though, but has been officially stated to be part of the Super Saiyan line.
