On April 28, 2015, Toei Animation announced a new television series for the first time in 18 years. The anime, Dragon Ball Super (ドラゴンボール超 (スーパー); Doragon Bōru Sūpā; commonly abbreviated as DBS) serves as a sequel to the Dragon Ball Z anime and manga which began airing on July 5, 2015 on Fuji Television. The plot framework and character designs are created by the original author, Akira Toriyama. A companion manga is being produced alongside it with the story being credited to Akira Toriyama and the illustration being credited to Toyotarō. The series is developed by Toei, in a similar process to the Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, and Dragon Ball GT animes. The series plot takes place after the Majin Buu arc, in between the ten year gap towards the 28th Tenkaichi Budokai.

Toei Animation producer Atsushi Kido previously worked on Dragon Ball Z for a brief time during the Frieza arc, while Fuji TV producer Osamu Nozaki said he has been a fan of the series since childhood. Morio Hatano, series director of Saint Seiya Omega (Episodes #1-51), joined Chioka as series director with Episode #33. Hatano previously directed Episodes #6 and #14. Masako Nozawa reprises her roles as Son Goku, Son Gohan, and Son Goten. Most of the original cast reprise their roles as well.  However, Jōji Yanami's roles as Kaiō-sama and the narrator were indefinitely taken over by Naoki Tatsuta with episode 12, allowing Yanami to take medical leave. Kōichi Yamadera and Masakazu Morita also return as Beerus and Whis, respectively. The first preview of the series aired on June 14, following episode 157 of Dragon Ball Kai and a thirty-second trailer including the new characters was uploaded to the series' official website on June 26.

Norihito Sumitomo, the composer for Battle of Gods and Resurrection 'F', is scoring Dragon Ball Super. An original soundtrack for the anime released on CD by Nippon Columbia on February 24, 2016. The opening theme song for the series is "Chōzetsu Dynamic!" (超絶☆ダイナミック!, "Excellent Dynamic!") by Kazuya Yoshii of The Yellow Monkey fame. The lyrics were penned by Yukinojo Mori who has written numerous songs for the Dragon Ball series. The first ending theme for episodes 1 to 12 is "Hello Hello Hello" (ハローハローハロー Harō Harō Harō) by Japanese rock band Good Morning America. The second ending theme for episodes 13 to 25 is "Starring Star" (スターリングスター Sutāringu Sutā) by Key Talk. The third ending theme used since episode 26 is "Usubeni" (薄紅, "Light Pink") by Lacco Tower.
